We have a chalkboard wall in our house…..it is the first thing I painted when we moved here……and then I left it to sit and stare at me and tell me to do something with it…..I didn’t, till this Christmas. I decided to create a chalkboard advent calendar for my daughter…she loves the countdown and has been enjoying changing the number everyday (she even has tried to do some fancy typography!….so proud!). I first drew out my design in my sketchbook….I started with the antlers at the top and worked my way down from that…..my final design is not exactly the same as I didn’t like a few things in my original drawing.
Most of my design was done free hand but I did use one design for the “Joy to the World” ribbon…..it was too complicated to free hand so I traced this onto the wall and went over it in chalk.
If you are wondering about the rain drops……initially I was going to add snowflakes but that is not really a true Australian Christmas…..it is not winter here and even in winter we never get snow. We are in the height of summer and in summer we get storms, almost daily, we live in a sub-tropical environment where the heat and humidity fight it out daily and bring us, at times, torrential rain (as a matter of fact as I write this it is raining). I love the smell of summer rain….after a long hot day you can smell it in the air and it is one of the most beautiful things. So to honour a true Aussie Christmas I added raindrops…..it just seemed right somehow.
I would love to be able to say this all came out perfectly the first time but it took a few mistakes to get the final product…..I am happy with it now and it is good to finally use my chalkboard!
Do you have a chalkboard in your home? What are you using for an advent calendar this year?
