Front Door Makeover

Colour Saturated Life | Front Door Makeover with Modern Masters Front Door Paint in Optimistic

Our Front Door was bland……but that was probably because for the last few years all it had on it was a grey undercoat. Like I mentioned before when we first moved here I wanted to paint the door red but with the green roof I was scared our house would look like it is Santa Claus’s Down Under Holiday House. I like Christmas, but not that much! So we just let it be nothing for a couple of years. Then I decided I wanted to have a old door as the front door until I discovered that no old doors would fit into our door jam. When it seems like the world is working against my ideas I do have a tendency to put things off…for a LONG time, so it was left undone for a while. Then I thought that if our boring front door cannot be swapped for something better I would just have to make this one into something special.

The first thing we did (over a year ago by the way) was add some molding to the front door to give it more character. Sorry about the terrible pictures these were taken with my phone before I had the blog!

You can see all my measurements. My hubby and I make a great team; I come up with all the crazy ideas and do the mathematics and he does most of the grunt work! He really is my better half and super helpful to have around, I highly recommend getting one if you have not already, husbands are awesome people.

We did mitered corners and glue and nailed each piece to the door and made measurements as we went so that the fit for each piece was accurate. When we finished we used putty to fill in any gaps and nail holes.

It cost around $15 to give the door this face lift and it looked way better just with this little fix. But I couldn’t decide for a long time what colour to paint it so it has just sat like that, unfinished and ugly. Then I heard about Modern Masters Front Door Paint, I can’t remember who’s blog I was reading but it sounded like the perfect paint for my door and they have such an incredible range of colours. So I got in touch with them and asked of we could work together on this project and they agreed! Choosing the colour was hard….I went back and forth a bit but finally settled on Optimistic which is yellow-orange shade that I knew would give our front porch the punch of colour and personality it needed.

I just have to say that working with Modern Masters Front Door Paint is such a dream, I paint stuff everyday and I am very particular about the paints I work with, I have high expectations and if I don’t like something I won’t use it, so for me to say this is great paint actually means something. I painted three coats in one day, which I think is the best thing about this paint. I have painted the front doors on our previous homes and the biggest hassle was the dry time and the time you had to wait between coats. I get impatient easily and I don’t like to wait around when motivation strikes so the fact that I could get this done in a day made me happy. Also this is a water-based paint so the clean up is so easy. Unfortunately for my Aussie readers this paint is not available here yet but the great news is that it is coming soon and I will let you know once it is available, I recommend waiting around for its release here, you will not be disappointed.

Once the door was painted we added a new knob and a door knocker that I bought a million years ago and for the life of me cannot remember where or for how much, but I have carried it around with us for most of our fifteen year marriage. It gives our door the perfect finishing touch!

Just for anyone who is wondering the wreath is finished with fresh Native Australian Grevillea flowers picked from around the farm. They last for a while without water so are great to use in a wreath like this.

Once we painted the door and had it looking nice I felt like our front porch was really coming together. It is amazing what a little paint can do and I wonder now what took me so long to finally get around to completing this project. It is so nice to see your vision unfold before your eyes and have it be everything you hoped…..and a little bit more. I know it is just a painted door and not some life changing event but it really has made a HUGE difference to the front of our home, I find myself sitting out the front and just looking at our door; our house is finally starting to look like a home.

That wreath is beautiful – I’ve never seen one like it! Thank you for sharing. By the way, I put things off – I think and think – worried it won’t be right, etc.ReplyCancel

Good job getting a project checked off your list. We have a few projects here that have been left unfinished for quite some time. I like how you added the trim for the molding on the door. I wouldn’t have been so creative. I probably would have thought my only option was to buy a new front door.

I also like your color choice! Nice work!ReplyCancel
