{Furniture Makeover} Mustard Chest

Colour Saturated Life | Old Fashioned Milk Paint in Mustard Chest

It is kind of fun sometimes to take a piece of furniture that is a little generic and make it into a one-of-a-kind piece. When I was on the hunt for a chest of drawers for a custom order I bought a few pieces for my client to choose from, this small chest was one of those and it wasn’t chosen.

To be honest I wasn’t really surprised, this is not a vintage piece, it has no character and is just made from simple pine. The great thing about newer pieces like this is that the drawers slide smoothly and generally they are in beautiful condition. This makes my job so easy and gives me a perfect piece to sell in the end. I chose to strip the top and re-stain it….I just don’t think orange wood is a good look! Then I painted the outside with Old Fashioned Milk Paint in Mustard which is a beautiful colour and makes me so happy. I have been wanting to paint another yellow piece for a while and this was the perfect opportunity. I replaced the BORING wood knobs with these Cup Pulls & these Label Holders from D. Lawless Hardware. You may have noticed I love this kind of hardware….I do like using them as they give a piece of furniture a little character….especially one like this that is a little ordinary.

You will be surprised to know that I did NOT distress this piece, I could have, I did initially intend to, but then I thought I would restrain myself and keep it clean and simple. I do still want to go at it with a little sandpaper but at the same time I like this look. I think it is good to push yourself to step outside your comfort zone. I may try this look a little more in the future. We will see!

I was reading someones blog the other day and they mentioned how they keep using the same props and they were apologising for this, which made me laugh because I do that all the time! So I decided to create printables for each one of my pieces that I could use in the photoshoot and then for you to download. At least then each of my shoots would have a different quote or saying to make it different even if I over-use everything else! I promise though once my long-lost millionaire uncle dies and leaves me his fortune I will buy unlimited props……..just don’t hold your breath!

The big question for you is would you have distressed it? I am curious about what you think about distressing, I know it is not everyone’s cup of tea.

Seeing pieces like this makes me want to start refurbishing furniture on a regular basis again. I miss being able to experiment with different colours, finishes and hardware. Just biding my time until the kids are a little older.
The mustard was a great choice. I have been wanting to add mustard cushions to my bedroom for ages. This has prompted me to look into actually doing it…maybe 🙂ReplyCancel

I am all for Mustard Yellow, it is my favourite colour so I say go for it! Once your kiddos are older you should get back into it, a talent like yours should not be wasted!ReplyCancel

You are so right, you took an ordinary dresser and turned it into a stunner! Beautiful job. Good job on not distressing it. I like distressed, but sometimes it’s appropriate to just not do it. Well done.ReplyCancel

This was so basic and boring when you bought it….I’d never believe it was the same dresser the way you dressed it up. Love the quote, too 🙂ReplyCancel

I love what you did with this, Gilly. You added interested without overwhelming the dresser’s basic qualities. No distressing: right choice : ).ReplyCancel
