I love trying new colours so when Miss Mustard Seed came out with her European Line of Milk Paint I knew that I wanted to try each and every colour……so I am slowly getting through them as I find projects I feel will suit the colour. You can see my first project with the colour Marzipan here. When I found these bedside tables I knew that they were the perfect project to try out Schloss with. They were the most hideous shade of orange wood I have ever seen….so orange they practically glowed!
I actually thought that Schloss would be the same as Trophy, I mean really, how many different shades of grey are there? But I was wrong it is actually a whole other colour and very much a greige (combo of grey and beige) and I kinda love it! Personally, I am drawn to warmer colour tones, I can’t explain why but cooler colours just are not for me. When I was searching for the perfect shade of grey for the walls in our home it took me FOREVER! I literally tried out so many samples and kept coming up with cooler shades that just didn’t feel right, eventually I found this gorgeous pale shade of grey that had the slightest hint of warmth. It is perfect in our home and provides a nice neutral backdrop to all my crazy!
When I design my furniture projects I always have a vision for the room that they will go into and how they will work with the entire look. I wanted these bedside tables to be neutral and just be an elegant detail to the overall feel to the room. I pictured a room with white walls and flowing white curtains over white french doors that opened to an English garden beyond. There would be a huge dark timber bed dressed with a neutral but textured bedspread that is a light warm grey, overflowing with pillows, the dresser would be a dark ornately carved piece that provided character and warmth to the space. In the corner would be a dark grey french style armchair that you want to relax in while reading your favourite book. I like colour, but sometimes I dream of rooms that are bereft…..rooms that just ooze elegance and a timeless charm that need no colour or embellishments. So to fill that need I design furniture to go into these rooms! Can you imagine this room? Don’t you want it in your house? I do! I suppose I could but then it isn’t quite me. It is fun to dream though!
There is a point to my ramblings….though sometimes it is not that apparent! I think Schloss is the perfect shade of grey, for me anyway, it has a beautiful warmth to it and is a perfect neutral. I am thinking of incorporating some of it into my home with a furniture project, maybe my new Meat Safe in the kitchen? We will see, I have not decided yet!
To create the elegant neutral look I was going for I stripped the top (as per usual!) and stained it with Black Japan by Feast Watson and I painted the rest with Schloss, getting full coverage with just two coats. I waxed the whole thing and did a light distressing. I decided to keep the handles as they were in perfect condition and looked beautiful with the dark stained top.
What do you think? Can you see them in my fantasy room?
I love today’s printable! It is a passage from Alice in Wonderland….one of my favourite books from my childhood….I still own the illustrated copy my Grandparents gave me as a child, it is a treasured keepsake. It is also practically our family slogan! We are always saying how weird we are as a family and you have to be a little crazy to fit in with us! I think all the best people are a little bonkers, they make our world a more interesting place, make us laugh at ourselves and force us to take life less seriously.
Thanks for stopping by, I always love having you here!
