{Art Fix} Wall Weave

Okay! Before we get into today’s Art Fix post I wanted to talk about the new kid on the block (no reference to a 80’s boy band intended, but I got you thinking about them didn’t I? hehe) Periscope! I don’t know if you have heard people talking about it, the buzz around it seems to be EVERYWHERE at the moment, or is it just me? It seems that every blogger is talking about it and is out there scoping out the new wave in social media. I have mentioned before that I am not particularly a fan of social media, mainly because I think that at times people seem to over share…..Nope!, I don’t want to see pictures of what your cat just threw up! TMI people! BUT……….(tell me you didn’t see that coming) I am kinda in love with Periscope. I read close to 300 blogs (seems like a lot when I write that down) and I love reading them, seeing inside their homes, being inspired by their creativity, cheering them on and being there to encourage them through failures and doubts. Some of these bloggers I now call Friends (Friends that I have never met and live half a world away, but friends none the less), these women inspire and encourage me, send me sweet, beautifully written emails of support and just make me feel incredibly lucky that I took this plunge into the world of blogging and have them as my cheerleaders! Their friendship is definitely an unexpected gift. With Periscope it seems like I can finally meet these woman, IN REAL TIME! My iPad will chime and one of them is there showing me their backyard, their latest furniture project or giving me tips on how to work out this world of Periscope. I, in return, can send them lots of hearts (who doesn’t want some hearts?) and sweet comments and for a moment it seems like that half a world between us has melted away and I am there with them. I know, I know, I am sounding awfully sappy………but seriously it is so much fun!

Soooo I am thinking I will do a live broadcast on Periscope! I thought I might show you the farm here in my little part of Australia and give you a sense of where I call home. But, don’t expect me to jump in front of the camera just yet, I may have to work myself up to that! I will let you know when, but it will probably be next week. The videos stay live for 24 hours, then they are gone so if you follow me on Facebook or Twitter you will most likely here about it there! Lets get down to what we are actually here for today and that is DIY Art, for those of you new here this is an on going series I have been doing that shows you ways to make easy (hopefully) and affordable art for your home. This one was inspired by the current trend in weaving. I actually really like a lot of the weaving I am seeing, it is way beyond the 1970’s versions that kinda freak me out  little. To be completely honest though I am not very patient, I won’t sit somewhere for hours (sometimes days) and weave wool, that is NEVER going to happen in my world! But I am more than happy to spend an hour faking it! Are you with me here? This is the supply list so you can fake it along with me.

Just in case you don’t know what a Chindi Rug is, they are an Indian woven rug made from fabric scraps and remnants. They are all unique and are full of colour and texture and really cheap, you can buy them for as little as $2 herein Australia. The basis of this weave is this rug (mine was 50cm x 80cm). First you will need to gather a selection of embroidery thread. I have a tonne of embroidery thread (why? I have no idea, I don’t embroider either as that would take too long!) and I chose colours that closely resembled the colours in my rug.

I cut the threads in bunches about 20cm long (you don’t have to be exact I just cut the lengths in half, then in half again).

Tie them together with a longer thread.

Choose an area in the rug where the coloured thread is similar to the colour in the rug and separate the weave.

Pull the thread you used to tie your bunch together through to the back so you have the section that is tied showing.

Thread the long ties onto your needle and thread it through the lump of embroidery thread and the part of the rug surrounding it and then tie it into a knot.

Do this all over your rug matching thread to the rug colours and be random in your placement. I am ALL about being RANDOM! Which explains why nothing in my house makes sense!

Once you have your threads in place use your hairdressing skills (of which I have none) and give those threads a trim, making the lengths vary.

Now just to add a little more texture pull out some of the fabric making little tufts like below.

There are several ways you can hang it, one is to attach a piece of thin pine to the back at the top.

Use a staple gun to attach it.

Or you can just do what I did and hang it on two nails! I am all about doing as little work as possible!

I actually really love how it looks from the side, I think it is all the texture and colour.

And that is how you fake a weave and basically save yourself days of painstaking work! The only drawback to this type of art is you end up with colourful thread EVERYWHERE, which can look really pretty for a moment until you realise you are the one that is going to have to pick them all up! If only I could blame it on my kid and make her clean it up….unfortunately she is too old for me to get away with that! Sigh!

I also thought I would share this picture (I always take a wider shot just to check my camera settings), as some people are under the delusion that my house looks perfect ALL the time, but in reality my home is a crazy mess! I just am good at shooting and styling around the mess.

I have lights sitting in the corner waiting for the electrician to install them and yes that is where my vacuum cleaner has decided to call home (it doesn’t have one and I feel bad for it). My hubby was sitting just left of the frame watching “Le Tour de France” and just below the remote is a pile of washing that needs folding, because apparently if you leave it out in the open you will get it done sooner but that NEVER happens! I use that Ikea stool for everything as I am short and at one point it looked pretty but I am a messy painter. My ceiling needs repainting since I decided to stick paper pom poms there for my daughters birthday (last year). And don’t you just love my husbands work hat sitting on my pretty yellow vase  in the bottom right corner, who needs flowers when you have a baseball cap? This is my home! It is crazy and chaotic but to be honest I love it and the two crazies who make it a home. So when I share pretty pictures you need to remember that just outside the frame is a woman wearing her pyjamas in the afternoon surrounded by laundry and a mess of stuff…..this is my reality!
