When I saw this little cabinet listed on eBay I absolutely had to have it…..it was going to be mine come hell or high water……budget be damned! I have a strict budget for items I buy and sell so that I keep my furniture affordable and profitable, but when it comes for items for my personal use my rules are slightly different. If it is something I have to have the budget is always negotiable…..in some instances completely ignored….because sometimes you have to buy with your heart. It’s not logical and definitely not something my hubby encourages under any circumstances but it’s how I work.
When I saw this I knew I would be willing to pay whatever it took to make it mine, fortunately I am in a position that I can see past ugly before photos and see the magical after images. Other people aren’t so creative which always works in my favour and in this case there was no real bidding war and I won it with one bid, within the price range I was willing to pay and a happily a price my hubby wouldn’t commit murder over! It’s always good to make it through another week without bloodshed!
So what was all the fuss over? This little beauty…..
It is completely adorable (or at least it could be) but just wouldn’t work for where I had in mind. I wanted it to go in my kitchen and that colour wood just isn’t my style and that patterned paper section is in my opinion….ugly. I wanted a more Farmhouse Style look…..so my plan was to paint it and change out the patterned paper with bead board wallpaper, which I had left over from another project. At least I thought I did, but I couldn’t find it, so it was back to the drawing board and instead I decided to create a vintage sign within the little panel area. I have to say I am glad I couldn’t find the wallpaper….some things are just meant to be.
I painted this with Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint in a custom mix of equal parts Linen, Grain Sack and Ironstone (this is the recipe for the new MMSMP colour Farmhouse White). It is a lovely off white shade with a hint of grey/green undertone….it is a perfect neutral colour and looks great with my off white kitchen cabinets. Once I painted it with 4 coats (one of the reasons I hate painting lighter colours is the number of coats you have to paint) I distressed and then in the panel section I hand painted this little vintage style design. This was inspired by an image I found on Pinterest……I took the words and in Photoshop created something that was more my style. And this is what I created…..
I think the words work perfectly with the colour of the cabinet.
Now when it came to knobs I was a bit unsure. I had two options before me…..some simple white knobs I have had lying around forever, which look good but kind of blend in or instead go with these Antique Glass Knobs which give it a fun pop of yellow…….
I think there is an argument for both, the white is beautiful and simple and the yellow creates that pop of colour that I love. For anyone who is afraid of painting furniture a colour, adding coloured knobs is the prefect way of not committing to colour because if you get bored or completely hate them you can always swap them out. As you know I don’t mind colour! The yellow is beautiful and even my hubby says he loves it! And he isn’t in love with yellow like me. So what do you think? Pop of Colour or Classic White? I would love to hear what you think and I will let you know my final decision when I show you updated images of my kitchen! There are a few changes happening around here!

Such a cute little piece! And I could totally go either way with the knobs, but I love how the yellow pairs with those beautiful flowers 🙂
I did that intentionally with the flowers! But I am still undecided!
Adorable! You have great vision and the piece came out perfect.
Happy Creating,
Karen Marie
Thanks Karen
Such a unique piece! I’m not normally a yellow fan, but I really like them on this piece. They make it even more special!
Thanks Jamie, I was expecting more people to hate the yellow but maybe it is not as bad in small amounts.
Wow, this turned out so pretty and your photography is super dreamy too!
Thanks Katie, you are too sweet!
Though I love the yellow knobs, I think the white on white look is my preference — so classic looking! Beautiful work and fantastic images.
Yes it definitely more of a classic look with the white, thanks Barbara
